Obituary for Charles Benson

BENSON, Charles Wesley

Passed peacefully surrounded by his family at the Kingston Health Sciences Centre on November 25, 2023.  Student #001 and retired Registrar/Bursar at Loyalist College of Applied Arts and Technology, and Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Ontario, Independent Order of Odd Fellows.  Predeceased by his parents William and Ruth (Smith) Benson and sister Diana (Leonard) Merchant.  Beloved husband of 51 years of Carolyn Anne Benson (Harwood).  Proud and loving father of Philip Andrew Benson of Belleville.  Devoted and doting grandfather of Graeme (Chase) and Andrew Benson.  Fondly remembered by nieces Patti Frederick; Heather (Frank) and Eleanor Kennedy; and nephew James Baitley (Terri Lynn).  Dearly missed by daughter-in-law Glenda Benson.  In addition to being a devoted family man, Charles was committed to serving his community and dedicated many years of hard work to better the lives of everyone by volunteering or serving on many boards and committees such as the Christmas Sharing Program, Belleville Community Policing, First Adventure Child Development Centre, Belleville Public Library, Belleville Adopt-a-Child Program, Camp Trillium, the I.O.O.F. Pilgrimage for Youth and many others.   He was a kind and compassionate man who firmly believed in putting the needs of others above himself.  He set a good and shining example for everyone to follow.  Arrangements have been entrusted to the Steele Funeral Home, 30 Moira Street West, Belleville.  Friends are invited to attend a visitation on Thursday, November 30th, 2023, from 4:30 to 7:00pm.  Memorial Service will take place at Eastminster United Church, 432 Bridge Street East, Belleville on Friday December 1st, 2023, at 1:00pm.  Reverend David McMaster and Reverend Ed Bentley officiating.  The service will be livestreamed    A private family Interment at Belleville Cemetery will take place at a later date.  If desired, donations to the I.O.O.F. Seniors Home Inc., or to the Charles Benson Bursary at Loyalist College, would be greatly appreciated by the family.  Internment at Belleville Cemetery.   For those wishing, memorial donations may be made to Loyalist College.  

The Officers and Members of Belleville Odd Fellows Lodge #81 and Loch Lomond Rebekah Lodge #248 and all surrounding lodges are requested to assemble for an Odd Fellow Memorial Service for our late Brother at the Steele Funeral Home on Thursday November 30th, 2023, at 4:00pm.
