Obituary for Edward Williams

Edward Thomas Williams

It is with profound sadness that the Family of Edward Thomas Williams (Ted), formerly of Peterborough report his passing.  Ted passed away peacefully at Moira Place Nursing Home in Tweed with Family by his side on November 10, 2023 just 5 days before his 92nd birthday.

Pre-deceased by his parents Clinton and Ina Williams and Brother Bob Williams of Peterborough.  Ted was pre-deceased also by his late wife Gladys Mary Smyth of Belleville.

Loving Father to his son Thomas Williams (Pam) of Belleville and Janet Stephen (Rob) of Whitby.

Proud Grampa to Tiffany Lepack (Jason) of Arnprior, Matthew Stephen (Hayley) of Toronto, Jaymes Stephen (Lorisa) of Barrie and Holly Stephen (Krystal) of Port Perry.  Delighted Great Grampa to John, Lucy, Henry and Charles and he was always thrilled to get updates on their progress.

Ted spent many years in Peterborough before moving to Marmora and later to Belleville.  Wherever Ted went he made friends quickly and became a well-respected member of the Community. Ted had a passion for sports especially hockey and baseball, with his favourite teams being the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Toronto Blue Jays.

While living in Peterborough Ted worked for almost 40 years at G.E. in the Comm Building.  During that time he was also the President of the Union and Business Agent for the United Electrical Workers Local 524.

After Ted retired in 1989 he spent his winters in Florida where he eventually met and later wed Gladys Smyth.  For many years Ted and Gladys lived at a cottage in Marmora in the summer and a trailer near Daytona Beach in the winter.  They loved the break from the cold weather and met many wonderful friends at the Trailer Park.  They took several Caribbean Cruises while living in Florida.

In 2008, Ted’s wife was admitted into a Nursing Home in Belleville and Ted took up residence at the Quinte Living Centre where he was an active member of the Residents Council.  He helped to organize outings, social gatherings and activities and called their Bingo’s for many years.

Ted also helped to fundraise for several local charities and organizations in Belleville.  He volunteered at the Christmas Sharing Program and was the oldest participant in the walk-a-thons.  Ted participated in the annual Mark Fyke Memorial Golf Tournament for many years and helped raise funds through donations to the Violence Awareness and Random Acts of Kindness Program.

Due to declining health and vision issues Ted moved into the Bridge St. Retirement Residence in 2018.  At Bridge St. he quickly made friends with the staff and residents alike.  Then at 90 years of age Ted became the Chair of the Residents Council and championed many changes for the residents there.

In June of this year it was necessary for Ted to move to Moira Place Nursing Home in Tweed.  Ted adjusted well to the move but unfortunately in late September he caught Covid, which ultimately took his life.

All his life Ted fought adversity. He had a debilitating stroke in his forties, several heart attacks and bypass surgery in his late sixties and eventually went blind when he was in his eighties.  Throughout his life Ted showed a determination and strength that we all admired.

Ted had a strong faith and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus while in Peterborough.  He also attended St. Michael the Arch Angel Church for many years in Belleville.

Ted loved life and lived it to the fullest. He was very sociable and enjoyed traveling.  If you could hear laughter in the distance it was probably Ted who was initiating it, he will be missed beyond words.

Family and Friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Ted’s Life on Saturday Dec. 2, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at the Quinte Living Centre located at 370 Front St. Belleville, in the Auditorium.  Committal will be held at St. James Cemetery at a later date.

The Family is requesting donations to the Violence Awareness and Random Acts of Kindness Program by etransferring to Chris Macdonald at macfyke@cogeco.ca. Or cheques can be mailed payable to V.A.R.A.K. c/o 70 Geddes St., Belleville, On. K8P 2X8
