Obituary for Mary Jane Cowan

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Jane Cowan of Toronto, on Sunday, February 25th, at the age of 83 years. Born in Belleville, Ontario in 1940, to Frank and Eileen Cowan, she was predeceased by her brother Michael (Elaine) Cowan, and is survived by her sister Catherine (Duff) Follwell of Belleville, and son Brian (Cathie) Weersink of Lethbridge, Alberta. Mary Jane, ‘Jane’ to those who knew her,  lived life with passion and was a force to be reckoned with! An adventurous nursing career beginning with training at Hotel Dieu hospital in Kingston, where she graduated in 1961, led to various roles beginning in Toronto, Calgary, Chicago and then returning to Toronto, where she took full advantage of all the city had to offer!  Never one to miss out on a good time, Mary Jane made her way back to Kingston this past May, to attend her 62nd nursing reunion! She could spin a great yarn about her adventures in these locales, and her family was continually entertained by her love of fancy clothes and an appreciation for all things trendy. Mary Jane took great comfort in her Catholic faith, and was a devoted member of St Basil’s parish, Toronto. She leaves behind 5 nieces and 1 nephew, as well as 3 grandchildren in Lethbridge, and many great nieces and nephews. We are thankful for her Isabella St community, in particular her dear friend Abbie, and her devoted PSW Irene, whose generous care allowed Mary Jane to remain at her beloved apartment through declining health.

Funeral mass will be held at St Michael the Archangel Church in Belleville on Saturday March 2, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. with reception immediately following at the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations can be made to the 14th floor, Cardinal Carter Wing, St Michael’s Hospital, Toronto in appreciation of their exceptional care.
