Obituary for William Babbitt

BABBITT:  William (Bill)

Passed away on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at Belleville General Hospital. He was born on March 26, 1933 in Belleville, and lived most of his 90 years in Prince Edward County. He was a son of Mary (Anderson) and Francis Sherman Babbitt. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Shirley (Wagner), and was predeceased by his brother Gordon (Corrine). He had 3 children; David Babbitt, Marion Rowett (Jim), and Don Babbitt (Chelley), and 6 grandchildren; Sarah, Laura, Adam and Emma Babbitt, Declan and Duncan Rowett.

Bill was a proud graduate of B.C.I. and the University of Guelph – OAC’55 and OCE’58. He had a lifelong passion for education, a scholar through and through, with a long career in teaching at PECI, Albert College and Loyalist College. During his retirement he enjoyed reading, jazz music, gardening, travelling, and touring the sideroads of PEC.

He was well known by family and friends as a colourful Raconteur – telling stories; some real, most not, to anyone who would listen. Having fun was never an issue for him. From impromptu PEC tour guide, to dinner table attorney, there was no situation where this County Boy couldn’t bring a smile to your face with his quick wit and natural humour. Bill enjoyed many gatherings and meals at his family farmhouse, where his grandchildren learned about his early day experiences as a university student, DJ, weather reporter, and Sunday School teacher.

Bill, Dad, Willy, Poppa – you will forever hold a special place in this family. May you rest in peace and keep the world smiling.

The family would like to thank the Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors, the VON, and his Medical Professionals.

Arrangements entrusted to Steele Funeral Home, Belleville.  There will be no service at his request. Donations can be made to Rednersville Albury United Church or the Loyalist College Foundation, if desired.
