Obituary for William Evans "Bill" Nichols

NICHOLS, William Evans (Bill) January 31st, 1938 – August 1st, 2023

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of “Bill” at home, on his chosen date, surrounded by the love of his family and dear friends. Bill’s parents, Beatrice and Evans Nichols lived in Middleton, N.S., where Bill was born in the Soldiers Memorial Hospital. At age eight, his father was transferred to Lunenburg, N.S., by the Maritime Tel & Tel. Living in view of the Lunenburg harbour and having his own dory was a big factor in moulding his love of sailing and the sea coast. When his father transferred back to the Annapolis Valley (Kentville), Bill with very little schooling found out that the RCAF was recruiting with only a grade eight. This was the opening he needed to leave home in early April 1955 to play with airplanes for 26 years. His first posting was to RCAF Station Lachine, Que (426 Sqdn) in 1956 where he met Dona, fell in love and proposed well after midnight on an emergency test flight of a North Star aircraft. The love has endured 66 years and three wonderful children, Wendy, Dewayne, and Diane, plus 6 grandchildren, 5 great and 2 great, great grandchildren. The song by Hank Snow says “I’ve been everywhere Man”, so was Bill. His first of many squadrons resulted in trips coast to coast, in the far north and the North Pole and Greenland. In France, it was to Sardinia and family camping in 13 countries. Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan afforded a two year tour with the Snowbirds. In retirement, twice Bill and Donna sailed their boat to the Bahamas for the winter. Respecting Bill’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no service. Cremation arrangements entrusted to Steele Funeral Home, Moira Street Chapel, Belleville (613-968-2273) www.steelefuneralhome.ca
